how much does it cost to get the timing belt changed on a 95-98 model (on average)

probably be in the 100-200 range (mostly labor).

Did the chain break or something? To be honest it sounds a little early for it to have timing problems.

I think the KA has a chain, not a belt. And it would be more then 200 bucks.

They have chains, its gonna be expesive as fuck cuz they have to tear the front end of the motor apart. Close to 6-8 hours of work.

hold on...unless the timing chain broke, you probably don't need to replace it. How do you know that it needs to be replaced, did someone (mechanic/dealer) tell your friend that. THese cars have timing chain guides that make clicking sounds when the chain loosens (tensioner goes slack) and starts slapping the guides. The chain rarely breaks but the guides "eventually" will and will fall down into the engine. This rarely happens but it is usually good practice to take the guides out just in case. My 98 clicks and so has every other 240 I've seen. The older sohc KA's were very bad for it. Let me know if this helps. John
