Anyone have experience with..
.. tearing down a road-worthy bike and building it? I'd like to find a beat Harley and do some work on it.. kind of a pride in making some thing rather than buying it.

It depends on the bike. Are there a ton of used/new stock aftermarket parts for it? Is it a fairly common model? If not be prepared for some hefty prices.
A bike is not that hard to work on if you have some common sense, access to all the tools you'll need and a good manual with great pictures.
Good luck with your efforts!

I agree with you 100% on the prices. IMO the best bet is to buy one new and enjoy it for years, after a some years pass the bike will stop depreciating and start appreciating.

Well, I am not too sharp on bike prices/worth. What are some pretty common bike that have some aftermarket support (suspension, forks, things that would be too hard to fab.). I just feel like having a hobby. I can design just about anything, and I am taking a welding class so I can be self-sufficient.

It's a hodge podge of different suzuki's that he put together to make one bike. And I'm here to tell ya; it hardly ever runs. And when it does it's usually not running right.
