i just started getting into bikes. i dont know crap about them and my 18th birthday is in less then a year and i want to get a bike. jw if i have to have my permit before i get liscence and a what is a good sporty bike to learn on?
yeah, depending on your area you should just be able to go to dmv if you have a drivers license and take the permit test on the computer. that gets your permit. have that for a month and take the road test. depending on your background you're not gonna want anything to sporty. most likely some type of older 600 you're not worried about doggin' a little bit
Take the MSF Class. Leave there with your certifcation and go straight to the dmv. Take the M class written test (also known as the permit test) and immediately proceed to getting any 600cc bike you want. New, used, old, or modern.
Once you get the bike, take your time getting to know her, because she is your new baby and she must be treated as such (especially on the throttle of new/modern 600cc sportsbikes).
Im tired of the whole "the new 600's are too much for new riders." If your new to riding but you take that class, you WILL come out of there with a level head and doing everything by the book. Its when you become more experienced that you will deviate from every single safety precaution and pet pieve you learned from the DMV sanctioned class. If you dont take the class, then just find something with two wheels to learn on for a while and then move up to something better. Just remember you have plenty of time, so there's no reason to be in a hurry to do crazy things on the bike.

i would recommend learning on a dirtbike first. my first bike was a honda vtr 250 and it was plenty for me to handle at first. and the best part was i sold it after learning on it for no loss.
In my opinion i think that you can start out with a 1000cc bike if you wanted to. yeah its fast but that doesnt mean you cant control it. just take things slow and dont be so hard on the gas and you should be ok. its personal prefrence in my opinion and also has alot to do with self control. if you have no self control i wouldnt even bother with a bike cause you'll just kill yourself. best way to look at it is that chances are your gonna drop your first bike maybe more then once so i wouldnt buy new unless you got some money to throw away, and if thats the case give me the money and buy a used one anyways.

I RIDE A GSXR600 AND EVEN IF I DIDNT RIDE ITS NOT HARD TO KNOW THAT IF YOU CONTROL YOURSELF AND THE GAS THEN YOU WOULD BE OK. IM NOT TELLIN THE GUY TO GO OUT AND BUY A 1000CC BIKE IM JUST SAYIN DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. NOONE TELLS YOU WHAT KIND OF CAR TO BUY CAUSE THEY DONT THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT. ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU DRIVE IT OR RIDE IT. JUST MY .02 CENTS

cuz cars aren't even in the same league as bikes. Sure I'll agree that lots of people get away with starting on a newer 600 but a liter bike is a little different.
BTW didn't you just get the gsxr last month?
