yes if you are slamming gears, if you are just driving gently and it takes no force to put it in gear you should be OK

 

Well this is with rev matching, so it goes in nice and easy. Well if its okay with the transmission, how come race car drivers use heel-toe instead of braking with the left foot, rev matching with the right, and just throwing it in gear?

 

slamming gears? If so can destroy the synchros themselves along with the possibility of bending a shiftfork.

 

just use the clutch..... they put them there for a reason. If you dont want to use a clutch to shift, buy an automatic and a ratcheting shifter

 

Its only ok when moderatley accelerating and gently slipping it into gear on upshifts, downshifts are a big no no when it comes to clutchless shifting.Best off to just use the clutch at all times.

 

I was just curious. I'm not much of a mechanic, and I was just goofing off while driving around town and it was surprisingly easy on downshifts. Then I got to thinking why don't race car drivers do it. So basically it just comes down to reliability, correct? Thanks guys.

 

Yea and takes longer to rev match than stabbing the clutch, also I know from experience that clutchless shifting can be a lifesaver in the event you're away from home and have master/slave cylinder failure.

 

Well I was speaking more for downshifts than upshifts. I couldn't see any point in doing it for upshifts. But for downshifts you could left-foot brake like the guys with sequentials, but still use a traditional production transmission.

 

You put alot of stress on the gears during clutchless downshifts. So I'd steer clear from it. As far as upshifts my only logic is if you have a master/slave cylinder failure. Though I've seen some diehard honda boys (or maybe they were just retarded ricers) slam gears while racing, but thats just dumb.
