I have an 88 civic hatch 4 speed and just recently the clutch has been making this really weird sound whne it is not engaged. I don't know how to describe the sound but it's very loud like someone pulling a rope against something else really fast. when you take it out of gear it makes that weird noise but when you put it into gear it's fine. I'm not sure what is wrong and I'm hoping that someone can help me out??

 

Probably your throw out bearring.

 

Definitely your TOB, should go away when you put it in neutral or hold the clutch in.

 

Buy a new clutch, the bearring should come with it most of the time.

 

yea, i bought a clutch from advanced auto for $100, probably cheaper for your civic...new clutch disk, pressure plate, TOB, pilot bearing, and clutch alignment tool.
