Default Honest opinion on car for road racing?

Here is the deal, up till now I’ve never thought about getting into Auto X because there is nothing interesting to me about dodging orange cones. But I have now found out that VIR (Virginia international Raceway) exist. So now I’m thinking about trying road courses out since I do like driving on twisted country roads around here.

For now I’m ruling out the use of the srt for this. Reason one is because I want to use it for drag racing, and reason two is I don’t want to risk wrecking it.

So I’m trying to figure out what to look at for a coarse car.

I have the hatch that already has body damage so no worries about wrecking and from what I’ve heard they make great track cars. It would take a engine and transmission swap at the very least to get it doable on a track though since the 45mpg engine simply would not make it any fun...

I’m also thinking about getting a 1G ACR to use. From what I read they came stock ready to rock and roll, plus I already have a Helmet being airbrushed with a Mopar design.

So does any one have any feedback on either option, which would be better/cheaper in the long run?

Anyone have any suggestions on another car to use for this? When I say suggestion I mean would be cheaper but just as fun.

Maybe I am biased but 1st gen RX-7's make great road racing cars and can be picked up easily for under a grand. In fact there is a road racing class specifically for them (SPEC-7)

Besides theres no kinder people than 1st gen rotary fans (really)

I'd use a car like mine. They are cheap to buy, cheap to upgrade and maintain.
You should try auto-x first and see how you like it and get a feel for the car since it is much cheaper than running at the track. If you crash at VIR and hit a guardrail, you are sent a bill for repairing the section of guardrail you messed up.

Also, plan on spending a lot of money. Road Racing is a very expensive hobby.

Which is the great part about the two cars I'm looking at, there light and under powered so there's at least a slightly less chance of making it to a guardrail and doing damage.

Either a Miata or RX7.

Go up and talk to Jerry at Commonwealth Kinetics (where the new dyno is). He has a few of them sitting around and he can probably hook you up.

second that on the miata, that is if you can fit into them! probably the best bang/buck sports car. A CRX would be pretty good to get started on also. If you do decide to use the hatch, try it out relatively stock cause if not your gonna be put into a higher class that you won't be able to keep up with.

Since several of you seem to suggest your own type of vehicle, I say try an mk1 or mk2 GTI....

Ever seen an '84 Rabbit GTI with a VR6 or 1.8T into it? We're talking 1600lb car stripped down relatively modestly with an easy 200whp with barely any mods whatsoever.. 200 doesn't sound like a lot, but when you equate it with a 1600lb car, you've got a missle! Plus it's always fun to be on 3 wheels!!!

Size nor power doesn't mean anything when you are performance driving. I have seen Cobra/Vetts as well as Volvo/Civic taken one hard. Chances are less just by a little tho.

I was trying to say that earlier but I couldn't think of a way to say that...
