btw, these cars have no metal radiator cap. The reservoir cap pretty much is the rad cap. The 2.0l are pie to work on, but she still got a good deal. I would guess the car did NOT need the thermostat, just the water pump.

Yep, the old plastic impeller wheel strikes again. I never understood why they and bmw did this for so many years.
But, if she overheated it... its still a good idea to replace the thermostate. If you cook it, chances are it will fail. The shop she had it repaired at was very fair in the price of repairing it
