+1 on the HVLP gun, and I would check out the Sherwin Williams auto division on Ingleside Rd. in the Norfolk Industrial Park. They have a ton of options to choose from, and if they don't have something you like they can order one for you.

Re: Learning to paint...need paintgun advice
I started off with 2 of these guns back when I still did body work

I used a 1.3 for color and a 1.5 for clear. I also had a Binks #7 for spraying primer.

I believe it was a 1.7

I use a Sharpe Finex FX300 gun, a Transstar gun and I have a Sata Jet which I managed to get pretty cheap. All do real well. You need to get the biggest compressor you can and put LOTS of filters in the line to remove contamination.

Re: Learning to paint...need paintgun advice
the best gun isn't going to be any good if you dont know how to spray correctly.
devilbiss spray guns and sata jet guns are good guns if your looking for a good job and dont really know what your doing.
and the best guns for sprayin your base and clear coats are gonna be the hvlp ones b/c you waste less paint and have less overspray.
but for spraying primer the gun is less important if you know how to sand relatively good.
