What you guys (car enthusiats don't see) is the other side of the coin. This areas is packed tight with moderate-liberal-consevative government contractos with a median household income of 105k a year. They have their nice single family homes that have skyrocketed in value. So they are running around here thinking they have accomplished something because they are sitting on a decent chuck of equity.

The people in this group ARE very concerened with their property value (while trying not to appear racist,)... So for policticians it's an easy sale "If you elect me I will vote for MORE police to protect your family and reduce crime"

While golly gee, paul, we want to protect little susy from crime, we need more police! So more police it is. But there is a problem, Cop's, teachers, etc.. they really can't afford to live here. Maybe if they buy some junker hud home in a bad hood but they dont want to do that. So you have an excess of law enforcement complaining about the cost of living (which is high here) who need a way to bring in more money.

So what do you get? a 25 dollar fix-it-ticket for no front plance and a 53 dollar "proccessing" fee.

Good thing little susy is safe though.

Preech on bro, you got a a lot of good points in your thread. Cant believe i sat here and read it all.

High cost of living, ha, try living in NYC then come talk to me about high cost of living. I used to pay $1700 for a 1 bedroom apartment, that sucked. And tring to buy a house there, not unless you rich.

Then congrats! I'm wrong about you. I've had this conversation at many different parties. (i embaras my wife) and i'm always shocked at the number of dumbass locals who don't know this is how you are SUPPOSED to handle this situation. Please help me educate the idiots who sit through 2 green lights while i'm going ape shit behind them.

huzzah for red light cameras that make this strategy impossible. i'm not sure how prevelant they are in NoVA, but driving around DC is like tossing the dice at every intersection. huzzah for revenue generation at the expense of progress!

I dunno about Fairfax but they took away all the red light cameras in Arlington because of the waiting at the intersection to turn. I think Arlington County got sued and the person who sued because of the ticket made a good point so all cameras were taken off.

Okay. There are cities with WORST TRAFFIC THEN HERE

1) Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I have driven through it a few times. GRIDLOCK ON THE WEEKENDS. This is because 75 percent of THE ENTIRE CANADIAN POPULATION lives within 150 miles of this city. It would be completely accurate to call Toronto the "New York City of Canada". I have driven through a 55 mile gridlock on the freeways up there because that is the only freeway heading to that particular region.

2) Southern California: I haven't experienced it, however Los Angeles outranks DC every year in traffic problems, so I'm sure there is a reason for that.

Things that I have seen in NoVA that makes it worse then MD:

1) Police Department Vision and Objectives: I know that when Maryland State Police or a Maryland County Police Car pulls me over (slight exception may be made here for PG County Police, I have slight doubts about them due to their history), its for a legitimate reason and that the community would agree with the officer for pulling me over.

Fairfax County Police, however, I have doubts about their vision and objectives due to reasons previously mentioned in this thread. I also find Virginia State Police's ability to control gang violence/activity questionable. Fairfax County Police doesn't deal with gang violence that much because the Virginia Governor has officially declared Gangs VSP's responsibility.

People bitch about the roads around here due to their HOV restrictions and whatnot. HOWEVER, THE PEOPLE OF THE COMMUNITY ARE TO BLAME. Anyone who has actually researched the process that VDOT went through to get I-66 built inside the Beltway knows this. You can thank the people of Arlington County for forcing an HOV restriction on I-66 during rush hour in addition to a 24 hour Truck Restriction (which outraged the Teamsters and Trucking Lobbyist Groups and I happen to agree with them). You can also thank Arlington County and DC for preventing the construction of I-266, which would have been a double decker bridge across the Potomac between I-66 and I-395.

You can thank the citizens of NE DC for preventing the final phase of construction of I-395. See, initially I-95 was originally designed to go STRAIGHT THRU DC using what we know of now as I-395. How this decision affects NOVA: All traffic cutting straight thru the area is diverted onto the Beltway. The Beltway was designed to assist locals, not out of towners.

Road Work: Whenever VDOT starts road work, it takes them forever to finish it. Exception is the Dulles Toll Road b/c its a toll road so they actually move quick on it since people pay money everytime they use it.

I may add onto this as people mention more stuff.

HOV's intended purpose for saving gas makes no sense in a county where people buy Porsche Cayennes, Hummers, and Suburbans like hotcakes. Open the lane at all times and traffic MIGHT flow smoother.
