it's not really a drive away plate, it's called a Trip Permit /Prospective Purchaser form. It's a piece of paper allowing you to drive for a single trip and is only valid for 3 days ...... not sure if the days can be extended but you will also need a Liability policy from your insurance company. You will have to display the piece of paper on the rear left window. I bought a car in Canton MI and took me 2 days to drive it back to Virginia Beach. Check your DMV for more info. Good luck

I'm trying to get the information now. There is something you print off the DMV's page, IIRC.

EDIT: I believe this is it. http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/c...emp_permit.asp

VA does have temporary tag type paper thing you get from the dmv. I had to get one when i picked up the hatch from ritz down in norfolk, drove it all the way back to NoVA with out any problems...infact i drove the car with that paper for almost two weeks with out a cop pulling me over to ask whats going on with no tags...

Great info!

My buddy had a car delivered from Utah. It was dropped off in a shopping center parking lot. As they were unloading it a cop show up and starts asking about the car. "Are you going to drive it? Do you have tags?" Fortunately, my buddy already had the title and got tags from DMV. The cops stays until he mounts the tags on the car and drives off. I suppose he still could have received a ticket because it wasn't inspected and didn't have a registration yet.

So, make sure you get perm or temp tags and DON'T use plates off another car!
