What brand of car speakers are good nowadays?
don't listen to this^^^high/mids-mb quart, infinity, rockford has a decent line for cheap if you want to save cash, jL has an okay line of components too, if you don't want components, i'd say infinity

subs-hard one, kicker makes a loud sub, but tinsel leads suck, JL has always made a quality sub, memphis makes some nice subs too. the infinity subs are not so much loud as VERY clear
amps-infinity digital
, if you want loud, rockford makes a great amp, as well as memphisthis is all my opinion, i held a meca record for 2 years for sound quality, and have LOTS of trophies from db drag, so i kind of know what i'm talking about, but i have been out of the system game for a while. I'm sure there are some fresh opinions out there. I personally run diamond audio everything,(with the exception of a nakamichi head unit), which is a very good product, but hard to find here, thats why i didn't mention it.
Sorry for the long post, but it's been a while since i talked audio, and i'm bored, lol. g/l though, now a days it's not too hard to put together a nice system for cheap!

I've got Infinity Kappa Perfect components right now and they sound amazing but they're pretty goddamn expensive. Eclipse actually makes some pretty good speakers, I had a pair of 5-1/4"s that sounded pretty great, decent price too (think they were under $100 or just a little over). MB Quarts are pretty good too. Subs JL's all the way, can't go wrong. I might be fucking up your budget though.
What setup were you running? I had a 12W6 on a 500 watt mono class d JL amp and it was pure ex-lax, never got muddy or came close to blowing (500 watts to me in plenty, especially in a truck when the box is like 2 feet away). Although to be fair, I used to have a 12W0 that wasn't all that, but then again it only cost me $99 so it's all relative.

^^ Yeah, sounds like you got a raw deal, JL's are definitely not a bad brand. I gotta agree with the guys dogging pioneers, every sub I've heard is just awful. Good for high school days cause of the price, but that's about it.
I would stay away from Pioneer. I got them installed in my dad's Accord, and it sounds like pure crap. The Alpine subs sound great though. I have Kicker subs in my car and they sound great too. IMO, for speakers and for subs, I would stay with something around Infinity, Kicker, Alpine, and Rockford.
Somethin's wrong....the gain or the air and space needed for it to punch....maybe too much restriction...or the 13 hours of blaring from Maine to Va beach and vice versa...thatz ass backwards but you get what I'm saying...
Honestly, there aren't really any "shitty" speakers out there anymore as long as you get em from a good shop. infinity, bose, pioneer, rockford, jbl, JL audio. You can't go wrong with any of those.
