I fall under the IS&GS division and work overseas in Japan on Navy ships for tech support. I dont have to much information for the DC/metro area but I believe the starting pay is 80's and high as 120's but DC is expensive from what I heard.

Salary up here depends on experience really.. Starting salary up here can be as low as 60k/yr if you're a junior.. (this is for unix btw) As a senior you can make up to 130k+ if you're a badass.. The way to go is to contract out.. There are plenty of contracts up here that will pay you 80+/hr just to do typical unix stuff.. And there is no shortage of projects.. I work in DC but I live in Centreville so that makes living even cheaper.. What I have done for the past few years is I have one very long term project that pays me yearly for a support contract to maintain their network, and then I always have my normal day to day project. Doing something like that will pay you very well.

 

i still have another 1 3/4 years in the navy, but the training i've got has been well worth it. as it sits right now i'm ts/sci cleared, and have obtained a few certs, to include Security+, Network+, SANS GSEC (GIAC Security Essentials Certification), CCNA, MCSA, and RHCT (Red Hat Certified Technician), and have already been approved for a MCSE in Windows 2003/XP class paid in full including all tests in January, and am working towards a CCNP before my time is up. most of my (recent) experience stems from network security, although i have some experience and would prefer to work in network engineering. my plans definitely include getting out of the military and pursuing civilian employment. my goal is to make over 100k in this area. i'm glad i saw this thread, because i'm definitely interested in seeing what the market's like as i draw closer to the end of my obligated service. anybody in here in any network engineering/ network security positions willing to divulge a little of someone of my skillset's earning potential?

 

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but when I see a slew of certs on a resume I don't get all sorts of excited. Most of the time I'll get more out of someone who has no certs, no degree, no college, and a small out of experience who has a hard of for figuring out why and how shit works.

You can find good people who seek and destroy any problem.

Just in my experience, anyways. I've worked with some complete idiots what had a a laundry list of certs. An interview is everything.

 

of course. but most jobs require certain minimal qualifications.

trust me, i have a firm belief i'd be able to sell myself well in an interview.
