AutoX tires, aye?
Hey guys, I went to the last autoX with tidewater sports car club at ACU-4 in november, and had a blast. however, I did realize that I really need a separate set of tires to race on before I go out again. What do you think -- what kind of tires do you guys use when you autocross, and how much money are you putting into them/where are you getting them? If it matters, I have a '94 del sol si, no major modifications.
Falken Azenis are good, but if you're buying a set of dedicated race tires, I'd consider something more sticky. I use the Azenis RT-615 on both my street cars. One is daily driven, the other is not.
I'm a noob, but does the same thing apply for Auto-X as it does for Road Racing? To stick with a street tire until you've "outgrown" them? I realize the reason you'd do this in RR is because there's a lot more danger out there if lose control of your car. Does this still apply with auto-x or is it not really that big of a deal, since the danger of losing traction and going into a wall isn't there?
I'd go with a longer lasting street tire until you start to drive faster than the limits of those allow.
I run 255/40/18 Falken Azenis' on my Mustang, and I'll probably keep with the Azenis for a while until I learn to drive it right. I've been to the last 4 757 Autocrosses (2 @ ACU4, 1 @ Langley, and 1 @ Pungo). They're uber sticky, and they last a decent amount of time, especially if you're going to use them mainly for autocrossing. Mine arent even showing any wear.
