I took the time to respond, but why bother. This thread isn't about that.

I think most people that are going to put 140k on a car like that are going to drive it until the wheels literally fall off. You either buy it new and eventually sell it, or buy it with higher mileage and never get rid of it.

I am kinda leaning towards a 2001 A4 1.8t 5spd

I just want a comfortable car, the AWD is a huge bonus for rain/snow/etc. and its rated at 30mpg, plus 2001 the 1.8t is rated 20 hp more

If I did mod it, it would just be very minor stuff, I will probably have a project car as well sometime
Don't take this personally, but just about anything on your list would be an entirely different class from what you're accustomed to with the Prelude. I liked your car a lot actually, but if you go from a Prelude to an A4 or a 9-5 (or anything even remotely in that class), you will probably be loving life behind the wheel. Granted, they're not super luxurious or anything, they are still leaps and bounds ahead of what the Prelude was.

If you don't mind my asking, what else are you looking for other than (preferably) AWD and good gas mileage. Are you looking for leather interior, or cloth? Sunroof/moonroof? Premium sound? I don't know what it is about a European cars interior, or if I'm just crazy, but I think the Japanese have a lot of catching up to do.

A4's started in '96

Anyway, I would be skeptical about buying a 2001 b5 with $7500, that seems a bit low. Also, (especially with AWD) you won't get 30mpg around town, but more on the highway when you're not punching it, unlike a civic, a 2.0 Jetta, or any TDI where you would actually see that kind of fuel economy in "city" driving. I know in my A4, when I was actually enjoying my car, I was getting 17mpg or so city.

I wouldn't be skeptical at all actually. Keep in mind he is talking about an A4; which there is an abundance of them out on the market now, and throughout the year. Im sure if he is patient he could pick up a 2001 A4 with $7500-8000 with around 100k miles - which isn't bad for these cars.

17mpg in the city when enjoying the car seems disappointing; seeing as I have two more cylinders and another turbo and thats what I tend to get if I zip around town too (18.4 mpg actually )...on the interstate I can see mid-high 20s if I just cruise and dont boost all the time.

Llamma - if you drive conservatively you should be able to see at least low 20s in the city with a quattro A4 and mid-high 20s on the interstate. Just depends on your driving style. But like eric stated, you wont see 30s around town unless you're in a TDI or civic, etc...but that defeats the purpose I assume.

Im not sure whats going on, and I dont think the others do either. Frankly most of the people on here probably could give a shit less. So how about you guys either start your own thread, or just let it settle?

This is about GaRn's next car, not Adam's next beef.

Nah no offense, it's the truth! My Prelude is a solid car, basically no luxury atleast compared to and Audi/Saab/Etc., just a solid FWD sporty car that handles pretty good and is fun to drive.

I really don't prefer leather or cloth either way, maybe cloth a bit more actually, to avoid the whole sweat in the summer, freeze in the winter (heated seats? ) and usually used leather seats on the driver side aren't in the best of shape. I have a moonroof now so I could live with one again, but not a requirement, probably save me from complications without it really, as I see a bunch of cars seem to have problems with them (rails, water drain holes clogged, motor problems) for some reason. A decent premium sound setup from the factory would be nice, I have a pretty nice setup now but I woudln't want to spend the money again.

What other cars do you have on your mind? It always helps to get opinions from others because there are obvious things that I always miss

Just the very limited browsing I have done on vwvortex and other VW forums, I picked up on alot of people complaining about VW Dealerships and how support sucks ass lately. You know it gets pretty bad when they compile a list of the decent VW dealerships to go to. Just an observation Not sure if it has anything to do with whats going on here.

Yea I did find some that were actually around 80k miles for 8,500, I'm willing to stretch a bit to get what I want. I realize that, but my commute is pretty much 80% highway or 45mph roads right now, not too many stoplights. I think the 01's might have been tweaked a bit for gas mileage according to their ratings too, might help I don't know.
