radar detector detectors.
The Spectre and Vg-2 radar detector detectors(RDD)have adjustable gain knobs, which allow the cop to get an idea of which car is using a radar detector. In heavy traffic, the effectiveness of an RDD is limited since it is difficult for the cop to single out which car is using a radar detector.
VSP are the only department who use spectre's in numbers, and afaik there only about 50 or so statewide with most being used along popular truck routes like rt. 17, 81 and 95.
Currently, the Bell STi is the only detector that is invisible to the the spectre but it will set you back about $450. Valentine 1's up until the 2005+ do fairly well against the spectre and can only be detected within a few hundred feet.
Using a radar detector in VA is like every other vehicle mod, don't do it or you gotta pay to play..
I'm surprised that wasn't said before. The V1 is only detectable within a few hundred feet but the escort x50 (and the newer one) both blow the V1 away. You can pick up a x50 on CL for ~$200
I used to have a radar detector, thought it was cool lol. It worked well it would go off and i would always see a cop in the area, But i noticed that if i went off, cops could easily zero in on me , so i always unplugged it if it went off a more than once. But in the long run, it never kept me from getting a ticket really, the one time i was being a dumbass and speeding thinking id be cool since i had a radar detector, what do u know I got a ticket. So IMO they arent even worth it.
Nine times out of ten, I bet he doesn't care.
Relative funny story: I was at work a few weeks ago merging onto I64. The car in front of me accelerated hard merging from the ramp. It's posted at 50 for the work zone and I was pacing him at 72. I was in his blind spot and could see the radar detector. I keep taking the moving radar on and off watching the radar detector go off. Every time he slammed on the brakes as he and his buddies looked around in a panic trying to find me. It was good for a laugh.
