I know you guys probably get a million of these
SV650 or ex500 will be the best bikes for you to learn on the street. Riding a dirt bike in the dirt is nothing like riding a street bike on the street the gixxer6 and the r6 are both HIGH performance TRACK oriented bikes. Nice with sv's and 500's are that once you are too cool for them you can pretty much sell them for the same price you bought it for.
since it seems that the sv 650 is a very dominate choice for a first bike i will look more into that after my surgery... i just never thought of v twins as good engines but if you say they are good at what im looking for then i will take your word for it
thanks so far for not being asses and actually helping

. Anyway take a look at the SV in person and as for the Vtwin not being a good motor thats because in the past American bikes have given it a bad name. The reason the SV is being recomened is cause its a great bike.
sv's are GREAT bikes. i've owned ALOT of bikes over the years, and my '00 650 was a great track weapon, and a sweet street bike. the ONLY caution i can give you is that if you are the type of person that wants to rip mile long wheelies, don't go for the SV. (from experience, lol) they don't hold up to that well. anything on two wheels though, and they're awesome. mods are a-plenty too, and not expensive.
as far as the two bikes you mentioned, i like em both. the gsxr's from a few years back always felt bulky to me, but not so much any more. they've definately gotten slimmer. both the gixxer6 and the r6 are sweet bikes. my suggestion is to sit on em both, and see what you're more comfortable on. being comfortable on a bike makes EVERYTHING about riding it that much easier.

^I went up to sunrise and sat on both and the gixxer felt a lot more comfortable... the seat was narrower and sat lower than the r6, but while i was there i figured id sit on the liter bikes just for fun and the r1 felt narrower and lower than the r6 which i liked.
and no im not the one to do wheelies
and boosted.. i understand what you mean man, it's all good

new is deff not the way to go, its almost gurantee'd you will drop your learning bike do you want to drop something brand new?? oh, and 120+hp is a pretty bad idea as a learner
SV's are nice, and i loved my katana 600, its a bit of a big though at 450ish lbs. a ninja 500 would be a bike you could learn on, learn to lean, if you drop it no biggie because they can be had for fairly cheap. As far as the experience on a bike vs a dirtbike, its a world of difference when you have cars around you lol.

I mean you will drop bikes at any point you own one though. I just dropped my 500 the other night while backing it out of the garage. Instead of holding it by the handle bars and backing it out like I usually do I grabbed the passenger bar and one handle and backed it out and as I was turning it around it fell away from me instead of into me. Ohh well, luckily it was in to grass.
