im not 100% positive but dont the tach run off the coil. or is it off the dizzy. look at the wiring for your car and see where it comes off of and check the connection.

I know that the ICM chip inside the dizzy will also make the tach go wack, usually when heat gets to it. It will then burn out, replaced this on a car that had the same problem....troubleshot the car and found that the ICM would cause this to happen, change it out, ebay has these cheap or find a dizzy for cheap and gut it.....

Vehicle speed sensor won't cause tach problems. They're completely separate, the vehicle speed is completely independent of engine RPM.
