I understand it quite well. As far as drifting (i think the fad is dieing and played put though imo) a fwd car is useless.
A rwd car might have an advantage in the twisties but dont think there arent any fast fwd cars on the track either.

 

Im not talking about any fads or hobbies or what you'd like to do at midnight...

I'm simply talking about driver skills, for everyday use. How it can save your life or your car. Kind of like the auto or manual transmission debate, I dont intend this to go in the direction of the "I'm better than you" mindset.

 

3 speed autos- best tranny for drag strip (imo)
6 speed manual-favored over an auto any day of the week in the twisties.

It's just like your example you brought up, it's just depends on what you need it for. Id rather have my fwd over rwd any day of the week if there's ice on the road. There also more forgiving than rwd if you make a mistake (again imo), but other than that they have no real advantage.

I'm curious, what do you mean by "forgiving?" You mean less damage somehow?

You choose FWD for ice because it's "easier" to drive?

This is also the point I'm making. The typical driver just wants to find the easiest way to get from point A to B. No one wants to learn how to handle a 60s RWD Caddy with a wagon-load of children and a St. Bernard (good investment btw, the dog can get help...) through the mountain like they did in the old days. The whole economy is getting lazy.

(Im not talking about car enthusiasts, keep in mind. I'm talking about typical drivers in typical situations.) Like the typical auto vs manual debate, If you know only auto, you are LIMITED to auto cars. If you know how to drive manual, you can drive ANY car, even big trucks if you have to for any situation that comes your way.

 

ive tried to take a turn while accelerating too fast in my neon. The wheels spun like crazy, but instead of the rear end kicking out, i just lose traction and start heading straight instead of the direction im turning. By simply letting off the gas, i can correct my mistake.


Yes. As well as safer. Im not trying to be some big guy and think im mario andretti so ill drive a rwd in the ice just because i think it involves more skill. I want to get where im going without incident, and im going to take the safest route.

Ah, this is the kind of information I have been wanting to hear. I have very little FWD driving experience so I dont really know how it handles. So that's basically +1 for FWD. A typical driver SHOULD by instance just let off the gas to correct their understeer.

...and this topic is about skills, not about convenience/easiness. That's the point of the thread.



I see that FWD cars are the EASIEST cars for all drivers, its safe and really simple to handle; but as car enthusiasts here, do we care about easiness?

 

Yes it takes some skill to drive rwd, so? Does that mean I'm better than Chris because I can drift a corner by hitting the gas pedal, no. Both platforms have their advantages and disadvantages.

I still don't see the point of this thread other than the fact that you want to show your superiority over FWD imports. It's late and maybe I just can't see things from your point-of-view.
