Cycle Newbie
Also, I don't know if you're military or not, but USAA doesn't insure motorcycles anymore and they outsource it to Progressive.
MSF course is a MUST! After that, as all have said, GEAR, it's the most important thing to have. Road rash scars aren't fun to have all over your body.
Also, BUY YOUR BIKE OUT OF THE STATE!!!!!!!!
You will save somewhere around $2000 just by going to NC. I had friends who tested this out just last season(summer) and they compared new CBR's from Sunrise to a NC dealer.

the bike in question is 3,499 MSRP
2k discount is kinda high
Worth a call to see how close a dealer is, but discount and gas = not worth it probably.

if its one of the new ninja 250's they'll likely tell you to piss off. Unless something is absolutely bizarre there and you happen to find one......they are selling like crazy everywhere....I asked about them at a local dealer and the sales guys started laughing and told me to try back in 4 months. Tons of people have deposits down and the dealers barely make anything selling them so they might not deal at all.
Hopefully a local dealer has one monday or tuesday, I just want to see the thing in person. I want to get all the MSF class stuff out of the way before even thinking about buying it. I'td be fun to just go in and charge it all to my card though.
so uh, at the MSF class they teach HOW to drive it right? I don't even know how to drive a manual car -_-. Going to feel like such a 'tard when I go, but ill pay for my friend to go at least so I have some company.

First of all....

Also, concidering the wheelin' and dealin' part. I bought my last bike at Scumrise, cuz they were the first ones to get one in. The '03 636 couldn't stay in the dealerships. I was on a waiting list for 2 1/2 months when I got mine. When I came in to cut the deal, they tried to sell it to me for $8200! MSRP was $7999. When I asked why, they told me that it was because the red one was the limited edition and was therefore worth more. They also wanted to sell me the rear cowling...the one that came with it! I walked out. They called me back and decided to start dealing. Unfortunatly, I only got them to do MSRP, and I didn't get anything extra with it. I was thinking with the wrong head anyway...but I also knew I wouldn't get a different deal locally...and didn't want to wait. I had to be the first on the block to get one. I actually got more interest at bike week in my bike than a buddy got with his RC-51 (that was new and rare at the time) or anyone else.
Basically, you have to be able to walk away from the deal so you can get what you want. I was happy with my deal because I didn't get completely screwed, but if I was patient and did a little shopping around, I could have done better. I found some online for $1200 less...could have gotten some new deal or paid my insurance for a year!!
