I vote Bardo. The atmosphere is just awesome by far one of my most favorite places to go.

or Italia Bella for real romantic/authentic dinig or even Aldo's is alright if you like italian food.

Go to Smithfield Inn.

And there's already a thread here for this:

and it's been discussed to death if you do a little searching.
I would say the Smithfield Inn isn't that special or upscale either. Don't get me wrong food is good and service great but I had my reception there and its not that Upscale.

I will check out Steinhilbers though as I have never eaten there.

That place is a joke. Food sucks!

Alot of old people and clubs go to Lynnhaven fish house.

If you are looking for a really high class place. I would say go to "The Melting Pot". It is really nice, really expensive, and all the tables are isolated pretty well. The food is very good and the service is on point. Its also different, so it is a place that you will remember. You could also consider "Tripps". They are pretty decent. Very good food.

LOL

That's a classic post. The melting pot as upscale. w00 and Olive garden is the greatest italian food.

The girl and I used to do a granby crawl (with perhaps some ferry/Bier Garden mixed in for pre-fun). Started with wine and the mozzarella basil tomato stack at Todd Jurich's (I used to make the mozz there... can't beat the heirloom tomatoes and the fresh mozz.. basil, reduced basalmic vinegar... we still make it weekly at home). I haven't been to the blue hippo in awhile but it was always pretty good for something creative. Then stroll on down to Domo for sake and rolls and on to Empire for vodka and dessert or more food.

I miss those days.

If you're just looking for something upscale and creative, Fusion 440 in Portsmouth is great. Though recently it's been a little slow but it's hard to have that kind of restaurant bustle in these times.

I've been meaning to try Sydney's newest place Stove but we dont get out that far often. Dude is an artist and it shows in his food and establishments.

Crackers is freakin great and their beer selection is off the map. IIRC, the same people opened Bardo and Empire and I know BArdo is a driven favorite but we've tried it twice and the execution was just not good. I don't know, everything sounded incredible (straight down to the sriracha - bloody mary) but nothing tasted good (not even the sriracha and that makes everything good).

there are a lot of great places around. what you typically in the mood for?

Bardo was nice but I think our chef made the experience better.

Overall I think they are overpriced

Il Giardino's isn't the most upscale restaurant by any means...but they have good food (from what I remember...I haven't been in a few years so they might have changed) in a nice atmosphere.

I can't believe you said Melting Pot and Tripps after saying Il Giardino's isn't upscale LOL

Tripps is horrible. Melting Pot is just stupid...you pay a lot of money to cook your own damned food which isn't even that good. No thanks.

Fredericos on S. Independence, or maybe Tripps. They both have very low lighting, and a quiet atmosphere. With great food.

hilton garden inn, the one by pembroke. Nice alc selection and decent soups and salads(never tried anything else). I had my 23rd bday there, was fun. that or screw dinner and take a day off and take her to great wolf lodge in willamsburg. its basically an indoor water park, I got a 1 bed room there last summer and they let us pack 5 people in there for the night, cost me less then $400 for all 5. http://www.greatwolf.com/williamsburg/
