They sometimes work fine. A lot of times they'll give you boost creep because of the way they work. You're better off with a electronic boost controller; they can keep the wastegate shut longer before opening so boost builds faster. The best way to do it is through the ECU instead of an add-on controller, but this isn't always possible depending on the software/hardware available for the ECU tuning.

I think the S300 has a boost control option, it uses one of the extra unused transmission lockup solenoid outputs if I remember correctly. It was the same trick we used to use on the non-VTEC OBD0 stuff to add a VTEC output.
Why they can't do that with the S100/S200 I don't know. It's usually all done in the ECU code (which is obviously how the transmission output already works), the hardware is the same no matter what.
