I think its like a pay as you go type card. You give em money, they put it on a card, you swipe said card at the station. I may be wrong though.

you dont have to be a member on their site. Altho it is very convenient because they give you e-mails on how much is left on the card
yes, it is basically a re-fillable gift card. It just makes everything easier so you dont have to go back and keep getting tokens and shit.

 

you can go to freedom put in your money they give you tokens/quarters you clean your car.

simple as that.
