I posted this in another forum but wasnt getting much. So here goes another shot!

My rear tire is rubbing on both sides all of sudden. The tire hasnt been recently replaced and I havnt done any work on the rear. I changed the rear brake pads like 6 months ago but it only started rubbing recently. I'm not sure why all of a sudden its rubbing. I definately need to get it fixed asap b/c its damaging the tire. Could this just be an alignment issue??? I think the whole tire/wheel needs to move back a little. I tried to take a pic or two of whats rubbing.

This pic shows the left side. The part thats rubbing is the part the chain guard fits into the lil piece to stay in place.


Right side...not sure what the piece is..but its rubbing the top of the tire.

 

your wheel has physically moved forward...check your chain tension.

 

+1, and check that your cotter pin is in place on your axle nut while you're back there. Not to mention torque specs.

 

get the factory service manual for your bike. Just google it, you'll find plenty of links to download I'm sure.

Find the section on checking and adjusting the chain tension. Follow the procedure to tighten your chain, which will involve how to slowly and slightly position your rear tire further back.

Also, whats the year make and model on that bike? what size tire are you running? I'm sure the OEM tire isn't that close to the chain.

 

Thats probably it. Chain is too lose. I would of never thought that would caues the wheel to move. Good looking out!

 

the chain being loose didnt move the tire.

The tire moving forward made the chain loose.

There should be some tension screws in between the axle and your frame to keep it from moving forward. It is like a stopper.

 

yeah the chain being loose is a side effect of it moving forward.

only way it'd move forward is if the axle wasn't tight enough. If thats the case, good thing you caught it before it got REAL ugly.

 

I tried to think of other ways it would happen low PSI etc. but having a lose axel or nuts was the only logical prolonged problem I could think of.
