you're right, but my color change on one of my cars(which it looks like he wants a color change)costs several times what his budget is,not including the additional bodywork i needed.
but,of course, every job's going to be different, and they may offer something with less extras-i'd definitely go get an estimate though-it couldn't hurt to at least find out.
there are also plenty of mid ranged(as far as price and quality)paces around here that are leaps and bounds above anything from Scheib or Maaco.i've seen several cars that i'd be more than happy with for what was spent.really, this is the way i'd go anyway.unless the car will be a show queen that hardly ever gets driven and is stored inside,i wouldn't want a full blown Wooding's job-it's just too much of a PITA to maintain and too much to worry about.

If you do as much of the prep work you can, that might save you quite a bit of money.

does anyone have any good resources on how to properly prep a car for paint? i did some google serching but most of them didnt go into depth or explain materials needed. i am hoping to pick up a shell here in a few days and would like to sand and prime the car myself to save bucks on a full color change.

Well I guess you would need spot putty to fill small dings
sandpaper ( ranging from 400 to 1500/2000)
block for the sand paper
bucket
water (for all the wet sanding your doing before and after the paint.)
primer (optional depending on quality of prepping)
obviously a very clean car before paint = you dont drive it while you prep it. Do it in a garage or at the lease cover it with a car cover/tarp if you have to work outside.
Paint it
more block sanding in finer girits down to polishing compound (no buffing until you get down to polishing compound.)

That will do on a buget and get good results if you put in the elbow grease.

*** Note*** I did not have masking/painters tape in here at all. you need to remove all your shit you dont want painted. do not mask it unless you don't care how it looks.

i'd get some estimates first and talk to any prospective shops to see if they're okay with this.i'd say that some of the higher end places m would possibly just end up sanding back down everything you just did.for instance,i know Wooding's wouldn't warrantee the paint on a quarter panel on my car that had previous bodywork.basically,if there was ever an issue with the paint on that part of the car,i was SOL.i told them to go ahead and work it themselves, and it ended up that the existing work was really, really shoddy,so i'm glad i went that route.
