my friend's got a 1998 chevy malibu that is stuck in park..

auto tranny

i push the button to shift out of gear but nothing happens..

ive heard this is common with these cars.. i also hear there is a manual override to the shifter
similar to honda where you stick the key in to "unlock" the shift lock. and put it into gear without the car being on.

can anyone help?

 

my friend has the same years car and you really have to apply a lot of pressure to the button on the shifter till it goes in and lets you move. is the button all the way in?

its probaly your brake light switch on the brake pedal. My accord did that and it was the switch. Check to see if you have brake lights also when your barely press the brake. The car needs to know that you have your foot on the brake to shift from park safely, like kids playing with the shifter when the car is running. My switch was $8 at BapGeon but im not sure about chevrolet switches, advance or autozone should carry them fairly cheap if thats the problem.
