Default have an old dirtbike question...

ok i recently purchased a 1974 yamaha enduro gt80... i can only push start the bike and it shuts off when it idols.

i know the bike is super old... i just want to ask you gurus where should i start in fixing this bike and what are the steps i should take / and what to look for with this thing.

i would do a tune up. ie spark plug, carb cleaning(replace parts as needed, i would do all gaskets since you have it apart), oil change, air filter, maybe new fuel lines.

does it have a starter?. if so i would load test the battery or buy a new one. then find out why the starter isnt work. ie be the starter its self or the relay. or a ground. could be the push buttion switch. theres a number of things it could be. i would start with those..


if its a kick start only then the kicker gear or sumthing inside the cover is broke. probly a easy fix. but you need to pull the cover and see whats going on..

i would buy a book for that bike so you know what everything should look like

that's also (if memory serves me right) a 2 stroke, with points ignition. I'd replace the points/condensor, and just know that a 2 strke won't idle forever. they tend to load plugs at low rpm.
