octane is just a gas's anti-knock rating, and higher octane is actually LESS volatile than a lower octane (burns slower). BUT, with real high compression, you need the higher octane to keep it from pinging. Real high compression on low octane fuel causes pre-ignition (mixtures lights off before the spark), and that's the knock or ping you hear, more-so under a heavy load on the motor.
