All prochargers are self contained and come with aftercoolers.

ATI's have intercoolers, vortech has the aftercooler.
But I dont really want to get into the techicalities of inter/aftercooler definitions but thats what the companies label them as.

ATI's are self contained where as vortech, paxton require tapping the oil pan as stated already. Powerdyne hasnt made blowers for a while as far as I know. You can still occasionally find some out there on a 5.0.
Postivie displacement blowers (roots/twin screw) also have self containted lubrication.

Cool Re: Forced Induction...an intelligent debate

aftercooler/intercooler, both do the same thing.. whether air/air or water/air..

vortech has to be different and come up with a new name just to confuse people

why in the world did they call it an aftercooler?!?!?!?!

"The term 'intercooler' comes from days when they were first used on twin turbo aircraft engines. With two turbos, the air charge would get VERY hot - it was heated by the first turbo, then heated again by the second turbo. To combat this double temperature rise they placed a heat exchanger in between the two turbos and called it an "intercooler" because of its location in between two turbos. When this same kind of heat exchanger is used on a single turbo or supercharger, it is located after the supercharger, and should technically be called an "aftercooler" because of its location after the single turbo or supercharger. These terms didn't seem to stick, though. The term 'intercooler' caught on and became almost universal for all heat exchangers regardless of their position. The term 'aftercooler' became synonymous with air-to-water coolers because this is the term Vortech uses to describe their coolers, which are water cooled. So while technically incorrect, we will still use the popular terms 'intercooler' to mean any air-cooled charge cooler and 'aftercooler' to mean any water-cooled charge cooler."

I have read plenty of stupid debates on the technical reasons of labeling intercoolers/aftercoolers and why one is called X, but should be Y. etc.
Easier to just use the company label names.

The reason alot of the f-body's are s/c is b/c noone makes a turbo setup for our cars...The one that is made is junk from what I have read....Lt1's are 10.4:1 stock so 5-6 psi is all that can be ran w/ them w/ any kind of reliability w/ stock internals....My buddy's 95z two years ago made 458 rw w/ a cam, shorty's, borla catback and 5 psi untuned.

True, but the most commonly used SC Prochargers are all self-contained.
Even the F1-F4 models which are used for 1000+HP are self-contained.
