Also look for a Izuzu Rodeo dana 44. I haven't read much up on them but if you can find one they can go under a TJ.
Good luck. You might be able to find someone that doesn't know what they have and wants to get rid of it cheap. A TJ 44 can go for $700+ in stock form. A stock 8.8 is cheap but then you have to weld on TJ brackets and install gears. My 44 will be for sale one day long down the road when I go 1 tons on it.

I almost pulled the trigger on a built 8.8 from East Coast Gear Supply. They are highly customizable and can do basically whatever you want and have it ready to drop in, but they're also expensive!
I've been trying to decide what my long term goals are for my TJ so that I don't continually spend money on something that I'm ultimately going to end up replacing--again. I don't want to do an 8.8 or D44 if I'm going to end up with 1 tons or Rockwell's or something, you know? If I end up getting another vehicle and making the TJ a weekend ride or strictly off road, it's going to be much more extreme. I'd really like to just pick up another TJ that's been wrecked or maybe a theft recovery or something cheap. There was a guy on JF that got a killer TJ for $400 in Cali. That would be an ultimate score, and I could go as crazy as I wanted with it. In the long run, I want to either go V8 or Cummins in mine

I'm in the same boat as you. My 01 Yellow TJ has been with me for almost 5yrs now and is decently built for dd/trail but it pisses me off on trails when I can't do something because I am limited by a mod that I choose to make it DD worthy. Then I get pissed when I'm DD'ing the Jeep and I have an aggressive mod that makes it suck on road (like when I had my boggers)
So I picked up a 03 TJ that was run into a tree at 55. Front clip was tossed, frame was replaced with another straight frame. No firewall damage and windshield frame is in good condition with one dent from the hood hitting the side of it. So I am starting with this, I have my 1 tons under it. I have an 03 4.0 from a TJ, a nv3550 5spd from a rubicon and a 231j case (that I probably won't use) I have all interior/wiring minus the seats. I need a front clip and then start building suspension.
This way I can keep the Yellow TJ dd status for awhile and throw parts to the other one. My ultimate goal is to have two TJ's on tons for the clam and I.
Word. Yea captain georges is the shit. Were at the Bonefish Grill at the moment.
