If anyone is considering using car oil in their bikes, think again.

Here's why:
http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/..._Oil_FAQs.aspx

Basically it comes down to friction modifiers, durability, and zinc.
Motorcycle/racing oil has more zinc for better wear protection at high engine speeds, no friction modifiers so your wet clutch doesn't slip, and the v-twin oil has better durability up to temperatures of 300º.

I think that 30w-50 was my winter weight...its been months I can't tell yah. I'd like a summer mix as a I KNOW I'm going to put at least 2-3 thousand more on her by december. I should contact ducati and have them come film my bike roll over the 100,000 mark in a few years and give me a desmo.

you need a go pro or two.

30w-50 seems pretty hefty for a winter weight.

I ride 20-30* weather in Lynchburg. How "low" can I go. I mean my bike is seeing 220F daily now with the heat back.

yea I'm pretty sure below 80-85ish you shouldn't be going higher than 10w-40 4t

Viscosity is the resistance of a fluid to sheer forces. The higher the viscosity the "thicker" the oil.
Do a quick bit of reading on viscosity here: http://www.carbibles.com/viscosity.html

More viscous oils don't flow the same as their lower viscosity counterparts. So if you use too high of a weight then the oil can't flow as well and do it's job properly.

I'm pretty sure that we're a 'temperate climate' so ducati's factory recommendation should be fine.
