So it happens when the clutch was engaged... is it the same when in neutral or in gear?
About throwout bearings: sometimes they make noise when they're worn and they are put under load by pressing the clutch in. Sometimes they make noise when unloaded but quiet down under load. Depends on why and how they are making noise. Are they grinding or are they oscillating, things like that.
