so if you see him doing something wrong just try and be friendly with him and explain (in a nice way) that what he's doing is not cool
if any of you see him doing dumb shit or he doesnt want to listen to your advice and is rude, then let me know

im trying to keep him out of trouble

What you're doing sounds nice, and I'll give him a second chance, and the benefit of the doubt.
But when I am going the speed limit of 25 on a residential road, and I see a jeep, way bigger than the car I was in (c230) swerve at me on a bend going about 45 with kids laughing (including your buddy). I am going to take it personally (mostly because I had my mom and little brother in the car with me.)
He probably doesn't remember it because he was with a bunch of friends in a car and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. But when it is something dangerous like that, I'm going to judge him.
How do I expect him to control the wheel when he's going way over on a reasonable sized bend, when I hear he can't even drive his del slo very well.
