Cycle whore thread
Don't ride like an idiot and I'm pretty sure nobody will care
I ended up with a '97 Shadow 1100 as a first bike, but that's because I wasn't looking for a sport bike and couldn't pass up a $1500 bike. It's by no means fast but it's a pretty decent ride, came with hard saddlebags / floorboards / V&H pipes / mustang seat. Has 35,xxx miles but it's a first bike, so I wasn't worried about it.

Nobody will care what you're riding man, just ride.
I grew up riding dirt bikes and so have always been pulled toward dual sports, but I still would love multiple bikes if finances allowed. I definitely need something more road oriented in the garage so I can take longer trips.
Get whatever you can find a good deal on and just have a good time riding. Don't worry about other people.

I'm not one to be worried about what other people think, I just don't want to have that stigma of being another squid riding a bike like an absolute dousch cannon, and we all know the Ninja is their bike of choice.
I am older, and I have kids and shit, again I honestly would just ride it to and from work till I get more comfortable and then start to ride for fun. After looking at all the reviews for it, it seems like one hell of a bike for an extremely low price (have two on CL with ABS for under 4k).
