However, it was one of the cheapest compact sportscars of its time, making it highly popular with younger people, and often they have been abused and not taken care of well. Stock clutch started slipping in my car at around 125,000 miles, thats pretty good for an upgraded turbo awd vehicle. Maybe im just lucky with mine, but i think that the reliability is based on the vehicles past, pick a good one and have fun with it. Dont believe all the hype about what everyone who never owned one said, thats just hearsay, if your going to take advice, hold the most value on the owners of the actual car.
eh, my car blew up at 126k miles, before that i had to replace the clutch, turbo, tranny, transercase, driveshaft and so on. I also changed my plugs every 2k miles along with my oil.

the 4G63T has been used for 15 years, if it sucks so bad they would have stopped putting them in dsm's and evo's. i think they are the best 2.0L ever built. and i could give a shit about what everyone else thinks about them

Ok, ill try to make this short, the reason is that the DSM is an exellent power platform, but heavy and wrong shifting and to much boost in stock form its going to break, like any car. but we know the week points the motor and cars have been around for over 10 years, we DSM'ers just make sure to best control that situation by putting the right parts in the way of the problem, know the 6 bolt to 7 bolt could be argued all week, i like 6 bolts but i had one 7 bolt and it didnt walk, but i know guys that it did walk on, if you get a 7 bolt you just put good parts to counter the problem area's, second the transmission is weak in the 2-3 gears mainly the forks, again 1G's dont have this problem as much, if you want a 3G GST do your research, make a plan with a budget for your build up, stage by stage, Fuel system, exhaust, head work, engine internals, bigger turbo ext... this is only a example dont use it. price your parts, keep in mind if you buy a $4000 car its going to need 4000 in work. up to about $6-7000 mark ive got close to 6000 in my 1G Laser TSi that i bought over 2 years ago, also keep other cars in mind and do the same thing make a plan budget ext.. and see what works best for you, hope this helps. Remember its not the car its the driver/builder that breaks cars

They do have weaknesses; just like every car. Just sad that most the people complaining about them breaking non-stop don't realize the biggest weakness is the driver in their case.

Take care of them and don't do retarded things like overboost or dog on them and 99% of the problems will fade away.

Yeah, I've had several reliable DSMs myself and have never had a problem. I just sell them b'c I like to try new projects. Today's the first break-down ever for me... b'c "I" shifted to the wrong ass gear .
