About the gauge cluster not lighting up... When you turn the key to the "on" position do any of your lights come on (check engine, oil pressure, voltage, etc..)? If not then I would suggest going to a junkyard and pulling the gauge bezel on a crx that you find (it will need to be out of a 90 or 91 because Honda changed the cluster between 88/89 and 90/91). Cut off the clips on the harness leaving about 6 inches of each wire that plugs into the clip. Take it home and check all the wires to make sure they are in the right place on your harness using the clips that you cut as a reference, the colors will be the same. It sounds to me like somebody was trying to swap the dash with one out of an older crx not knowing that the wiring is different and was trying to wire the gauge cluster without a schematic...

I know on obd-1 and obd-2 vtec engages at 5500 rpm, when oil pressure is normal, speed is above 30mph, and engine is not in warm up mode. You should check your oil, ohm out your vtec solenoid to see if it is getting the right voltage and make sure the wires are in the right ecu sockets... Cleaning it out would not hurt either.

If you need any help I will come take a look at it. I want to see this beast on the road...
