New Update On The Car Thieves
With the arrest Wednesday of a seventh suspect in what authorities called the "bumper car thieves" case, Loudoun County officials closed the case on a month-long series of auto thefts, particularly of Honda Civics.
Jose Luis Fuentes, 21, an Arlington resident for whom arrest warrants had been issued, turned himself in. He was charged with five counts of grand larceny and five counts of conspiracy to commit grand larceny.
Beginning Dec. 28, eight vehicles -- including seven Civics -- were stolen from Sterling and raced along back roads in western Loudoun. Seven of the cars were abandoned in the area, and in one case a car was set on fire. A regional investigation turned up at least seven more car thefts in Northern Virginia that officers believed were linked to the Loudoun cases.
A Sheriff's Office spokesman said deputies got a break in the case when they arrested two Fairfax County teenagers Jan. 24 near Waterford. Within weeks, four others had been arrested. All, like Fuentes, face five counts of grand larceny and five counts of conspiracy to commit grand larceny.
