ok...so i'm fairly new to this area...less than a month. the DMV gave me "30 day tags" and said i need to get my cars emissions tested to get my FD plates back.

anyway...if i understand this right...95 and under cars go on the rollers at 2 certain speeds and they use the sniffer while up there.???

96+ cars just get plugged into and the diagnostics ran to see if it's got codes or not??? do they sniff the 96+??

just trying to get this right. my 95 Avenger is mostly stock with a small tranny fluid leak.

my 96+ is built and boosted. and i have to figure out what CEL is that keeps coming up. I think it's too rich and it keeps triggering the sensors/light.

I"m i even close with what happens for this emissions test thing. I have till end of Sept. to get it done.

Sorry if it's a little off topic...just saw it was one of the more recent threads.

On OBD1 cars, they simply put it on the rollers and put the Gas Analyzer sniffer in the exhaust. If you've got a cat and aren't running extremely rich, you shouldnt have a problem.

On OBD2 cars, they plug the emissions equipment into the OBD@ Diagnostic Port and read for DTC's, emissions readiness, etc. This means that the ECU cannot be switched to an OBD1 ECU like a lot of honda guys do to get Hondata, etc. It also means that you cant just unplug the battery or clear the codes, because 1) they stay in the ECU and 2) because it wont pass a readiness test. It pretty much fucks those of us who tune on OBD2 cars.

ok...so reading that, my blue avenger will get put on the rollers because it's a 95 and should pass no problem because it's basically stock, save for a CAI and muffler.

my purple car is a 96, so it will get the plug and play test, and I have to get my CELS to be fixed correctly and stay off for it to pass.

thanks

they dont sniff AWD cars period, since most stations do not have AWD dynos.
