They are very reliable, just need to be sure you do the preventative maintenance to keep them cheap.
The e36 is one of the more solid platforms that BMW made as far as reliability and good design, except the 318 that is.

BTW, they suck turbo'd. So depressingly slow for the power they make...and not very strong for big power out of the box.

i have no desire to turbo this thing.it feels somewhat quick,which is fine with me.i think all my other vehicles will outrun it,so no need try to catch up

BTW-i'm looking for two 245/40-17 tires,as well as two rear DSII OEM wheels,if anybody has a line
