I am basing my info off of accidents, not the fact of something that has not happened yet. Statistics say 75% of motorcycle accidents involve another moving vehicle. A huge majority of those accidents occur from the front of the bike where a vehicle has pulled out or where the bike hits the vehicle. So if a pipe is facing the back of the bike, how would it prevent or save a life? A bright colored reflective vest will save your life and decrease an accident more than a loud exhaust.

Opposed to loud exhaust? Let's see.
All my Mustang's have had catless exhaust, my Camaro has exhaust work.
All my bikes have had exhaust work done to them.

Nope, I love mine too, but that is not why I got it.

i don't think the saying ever implied the concept that having an exhaust would prevent you from getting in an accident... but i'm pretty sure it's an indisputable fact that having a loud exhaust raises the awareness of other drivers around you that you're there.

whatever. i'm done.

op, glad you're ok.

I'm not saying the exhaust is some lifesaving device, but it will raise awareness, i've been at a light with a blackhawk 1200 next to me with stock exhaust and when i looked over it startled me how close he was and I hadn't heard him.

in the case of this thread, no it wouldn't have helped.

Loud pipes save lives. Tell me how a loud pipe will save your life? A loud pipe will do a few things.
1. It will make some people around you notice you are nearby, but they may not see you. Notice how I did not say those coming at you. Then again, that can't be proven if that did or did not prevent an accident from happening.
2. Hammering down and It could startle someone next to you or who you are overtaking and who knows how they will respond.
3. Piss off people.

Here are a few examples of motorcycle accidents where a rider can be killed. These are the majority of how motorcycle accidents can happen.

Having a car pull out or turn in front of you and you hitting them.
Sitting at a light waiting and being rear ended by a car that did not see you.
Wrecking on a turn.
Riding too fast and wrecking.

Can someone explain how having a loud pipe save the life of a rider who wrecks in those situations? All I am saying is it will not save your life in a crash. It may make others aware you are around, but there is no proof that it really did prevent something when that event never took place. Can anyone predict the future? There are other things that are cheaper than will raise motorist awareness of a rider.

the saying doesn't mean a loud pipe will save every single motorcycle rider out there. you can't count the number of accidents a pipe has prevented.

They saying it itself is just that, a saying and doesn't hold any merit or validity.
