Is this gonna be your first bike?
'Bout to get me a 02' GSX-R 750, been riding for about 6 months (still beginner compare to the other readers here, I'm sure). But I dont think it matters whether you get a 250 or 1300, I think its all up to the individual. Think about it, the bike will not run without the rider;therefore, it won't do crazy stupid things without a crazy stupid rider, you control what the bike does...If you are one of those dumb asses who tries to show off and just do stupid things, then yeah, you will get into a wreck. I have heard of a skilled person that's been riding for like years and still get into a wreck...So dont blame the bike, blame the rider!!!

a 600 is a lot less forgiving then a 1000 on the throttle and stuff. It's easy to make stupid mistakes.

yes... there's a big difference with a 500 to a 600 as far as sportbikes.
its like going from 600 to a liter bike difference.
Sometimes when I ride....My balls get ahead of me..but thats just me. My 0.2 cents a new rider shouldnt get a new sport bike. But then again everyone wants to be cool
