+1 learn how to do some eskimo rescues/rolls out on the lake before you try going anywhere with a current.
That depends on wether they have a sit-on-top or sit-in kayak. SIK you NEED to learn the roll, SOT you just fall off. For rivers you wnt a SIK and for fishing a SOT is prefered.

so that when ya get tossed over.. you know to make urself come back up to the top and stay up.. i guess. it's like driving.. try to lose contorl sometimes so that when it really happens you know how to react. (just my guess but seems smart to me)

i assumed you got a SIK like the previous post mentioned, but you're going to want to learn how to roll yourself back up if you get flipped upside down (instead of having to do a wet exit everytime). it's a little harder than you might think because when you're upside down and underwater things start to get disorienting
