thanks a lot for the help guys. like i said i would be perfectly comfortable driving around with no speedo. i've had no problems up to this point and 77 or whatever in a 65 i don't consider that bad on 64...hell i was pretty positive i was going 75 or at least in that neighborhood. i'm about done fixing the oil leak/sanding/painting some rust on the battery stand thing. so i should be able to drive it by tonight to see if my little fix will help it work at all. if not gotta order a part.

If you're going to replace the VSS, I highly recommend you go pull one from a junkyard or find someone that will sell you one used. I was in the same boat and ended up buying one for $10 from a buddy of mine.

If it's not the VSS (which honestly to me it doesn't sound like it is) the cluster is probably the culprit. Does the needle stick with the speed you're going and then randomly bounce around for a few seconds?

well it doesn't work at all right now. when it did it would do that sometimes. sometime next week i'll try and pull the cluster out and see if that's the issue.
