Can't say I ever used that method when I did it anyway. You can feel the front balancer and tell if its 180 out or not.

The back is not involved with timing belt. Diff belt.

got your spark plugs in it when you're doing the belt? I would put the car in gear also to keep the crank from turning on you when you're trying to set the belt up

First of all the front balance shaft just needs to be lined up for the balance shaft belt, if you dont have that? Well tehre you go. The rear balance shaft is integrated into the OEM Oil pump that can have the line line up, but can be out of phase, to check, pull the 12 or 14mm bolt in the back of the block and try to delicately place a screwdriver in there, rotate the oil pump until you can push the screwdriver more than like an inch in.

When setting up timing on my friend's car when we started to tension the belt with the tensioner we did notice everything lined up and then it came off when you tightened. What I did was untension the belt a little bit at the cams, so they were off until you tightened it up, and then everything lined up perfectly when tensioned.

I'd love to get a second opinion on it though, no matter what we do we cannot get the timing set correctly. Now I've set the timing on this car 3-4 times and I've never noticed this problem before. The cams can be set perfect, both oil pump sprocket and crank are aligned perfect, and then when the tensioner pulley is torqued it only moves the crank alignment, about a 1/4" clockwise. All new oem timing parts should be there tomorrow, so I'm planning on coming in this weekend and finishing it.
Did you get it fixed over the weekend?

OK guys.....I was pulling into my garage this morning and all of a sudden my check engine light came on.......then my battery light came on as well as my engine bay light and my brake light (even though my e-brake was not pulled up) ....... Do you guys have any idea why all these lights may have came on?? ........ So this morning when I started up my car again to go to work, all those lights still came on, but then I started driving they faded away! But when I come to a complete stop they reappear!! What is going on here!?

Sounds like your battery/ alternator is failing.

I was just throwing ideas out, it could be something else but it sounds like when your idling your voltage is dropping and causing your gauge cluster lights to act up. Does the car struggle to idle? If you bought the battery / alternator through advance then you should still have a warranty to cover it. I know Brian had a lot of problems with purchasing aftermarket alternators.
