Stop taking "Im the man" pills, you really are not that cool.
Verizon's FIOS brings fiber to the tap, then it uses copper into the house. Cox uses fiber to the node, or pretty much the entrance to the neighborhood. Then it uses huge copper to the tap, then normal rg6/rg11 to the house and rg6 inside. The distance for the large copper and the RG6/11 is so small that you're not going to notice that huge of a difference with FIOS unless you're running massive amounts of bandwidth.
The RG6 will still be the limiting factor.

I'm already there. Been with Verizon since 99. Most of the fiber splicers we've hired in the past 2 years are temp hires. Once the Fios is deployed enough to start creating revenue, the temps will be laid off as more and more of us are brought to that side to do the work. So if you do get a job with us, don't bank on it being permenent.
Cox network here in the 757 is about the worst there is. They are constantly trying to improve.
Right now there is some changes coming through. They are going to VOIP and removing the 90volt NIU/IVP system they run now. The powered systems generates too much noise in the lines, Which creates issues in the node.
You live in an apt and if you are like most people i have dealt with....you probably need a new line run to your unit, which will be a cost to you. Most apt's have issues, not because of COX, but because people fuck up the taps trying to steal cable, allowing more noise into the network.
AS far as FIOS......its FIBER to the HOUSE, not the tap. My brother installs it in NoVa. It will hurt COX when it gets here. The video resolution will be up to 1080i, a 5mb connection will be a true 5mb connect. I am excited.

I was having a similar problem as you about a year ago, and come to find out it was the modem that I had. It was a very old Toshiba, one of the first ones they were issuing. I went out and got a new one and it's been great ever since. I think I've had to reset the modem once in year since I got it.
