not true, at idle, average car uses a half a mile worth of gas per minute. FI cars these days use very little start up fuel, that part is a myth. They said it back when cars were carbureted.
I inject a total of 1.4ms of fuel to crank at +160*. I idle at .7ms of fuel.
once I idle more than 6 seconds, I've used more gas.
as far as coasting to a stop, if you stay in gear and pull vacuum, you tend to not inject ANY fuel at all. For example, in any condition above 1800RPM and less than 23kPa of atomsphere I cut fuel.
Also cruise at 16:1 AFR.

Yea, diesel cars/trucks are better off left at idle. Diesals use massive amounts of fuel pressure, lots more than the gasoline systems, therefore dispersing more fuel at start up.
