I
'd when he tried to take off in 2nd.. then I just shook my head when he missed 2nd the second time around...
Had my first tank slapper today, and can definitely say it was not a pleasant experience. -- It all happened so quick; one second the front end was getting light (used to that), next second my feet were off the pegs and I was squirrelly.. I'm really surprised I stayed as calm as I did, and rode it out.

I only know my bike, don't even know what you ride. Every bike is different. But there are certain settings that lean more towards stability, and others towards flickability.
Somewhere in the mix head shakes become more likely or not.
As Neo said, your best bet is setting your sag. That may have been a contibutor, if the forks are way too bouncy that helps tank slappers come out more.

It never happened to me for the longest time. Then all of a sudden.. anytime i was over 120.. it would start to shake and want to slap. I looked into everything that I thought it could be with the bike. Couldn't ever find anything wrong. One day... ended up doing about 75 dropped it into 3rd and kicked it. Immediately went into a tank slap. I was able to pull it out but was in a full lean to avoid hitting a jersey wall (which didnt work). I clipped the front of the jersey wall and bent my rim.
i replaced my rim and purchased a new tire.
LOW AND BEHOLD!!!! It stopped tank slapping! It was crazy. I then realized that it started doing it. After I had my tires changed at Sunrise!!!! I talked to a few other people and found that A LOT!!!! of people have had poorly balanced tires come from Sunrise!
So... lesson learned... if your tire is out of balance.. it can cause you to tank slap. And never have your tires done at Sunrise. I also purchase a GPR stabilizer shortly after that close call. Just to insure that it doesn't happen again. and I love that GPR. It will go on ever bike that I own!
It is quite the experience right?! LOL... glad you came through it. Alot of people grab the brake and make it worse.
