My first bike project
clean and adjust the points. points/condensor ignitions need constant attention. if it's not EXACTLY right the bike will start to act up. points wear as you ride, and get pitted sometimes, they have to be cleaned and reset.
i am eliminating the points..but tend to think though it may be the points...it starts up fine after some cool down time, coil may be the bigger issue
And being this bike as not had that much ride time the points should not be the issue unless something wasn't done right Our current Mechanic hasn't had to adjust his since he built his bike.

Ok so I ordered my Dyna Ignition...playing with the points is not fun they are very finicky !...so I dont want to deal with that issue again! Hopefully it will run fine after that...its just weird cuz i tested the plug wires and the 2 on the right side as you sit on the bike are not testing good but the plug sparks fine and they run off 2 different ignition coils so hopefully this resolves my issue...im just not sure where the indicators should line up...i read the manual and the pics and directions suck on how to adjust the points...there are 2 dots on the plate and a grove on the point does it go in between the 2 dots or on 1 of them and then the plate itself rotates is that supposed to be inbetween the dots or on 1???? I tried it all different ways...oh well the Electric Ignition is on its way!
the easiest way to check the points (use new points, they are like $7 each and who knows how old they are) is to remove the cover and slowly kick the engine over until you have the points opened at their widest point. you should only have .012" gap between the two parts of the points. adjust as needed by losening the phillips head screws. As far as ignition timing, i run mine pretty advanced, but go by what the repair manual says.
I've never seen bad coils on these older hondas so wouldn't suspect it on yours. The wires and boots go bad often, and the dyna ignition is a must have upgrade. want to buy a spare cb350f frame or engine?

they are new points installed a few months ago, i only have like 3 hrs of ride time on them and maybe like 20 miles. i cleaned them.
so they are not supposed to be flush together? only .012 at the widest or at rest? I am still learning about these older bikes...but i love it! About the frame and engine i love my 350 and all but if I am going to mess around I want a 550 or better. Plus it was hard as a bitch to find a petcock, petcock rebuild kit airbox...yada yada yada. i cant imagine trying to find the rest of the parts
A guy came into the shop today telling us about a 76 cb550F that he broke down to learn but never got around to putting it back together. So we are going to pick it up. i would love the callenge of putting it back together, but since i didn't see it come apart it might be hard!

i thought you had a manual for that bike? i have one on file if you want it.
gap specs for that bike are .012-.016. timing is probably easier set with a timing light for setting it up to stock advance.
Ok so my hubby wants me to see how much you want for the engine??? PM me w/ the info please!
As for the gapping i am gonna look into it tomorrow...a light bulb is coming on and i just might take Shane up on his offered help. he is trying to let me figure it out...

set the gap as best you can, set the timing with a timing light, (a timing strobe, not a light bulb, the bulb is for checking gap, it just lets you know the precise moment the points open or close), then recheck the points gap. that's the easiest way to do it. keep in mind that variations in point gap changes the timing a bit.
