Metal sliders could easily catch the edge of something and cause the bike to flip when sliding, a soft plastic slider will wear away and limit friction.

That's what I was aiming for, just wasn't sure of which brand.
Most of the 'cheap-y' kits on ebay work great, if you drop the bike and scuff one up then they're cheap to replace. The no-cut versions aren't as strong but with then you won't need to drill a large hole in the fairing.

I'd probably just shell out the extra $40 for the no cuts. No sense in messing it up.
I agree with the no cuts, the Shogun no cuts are nice if you don't mind spending the extra amount.
Thankfully for my 04 R1 there is no cutting needed unlike the 07-08 R1.
