VTEC Over Rated?
if you plan on keeping the motor stock, then vtec is good if you want to pay another $1500 for it. but if you plan on building the motor from bottom up, then in my opinion vtec is not needed. if you say vtec or any other form of it is the only way to be fast, then you're saying any motor that was built before the 90's doesnt have the ability to be fast. Look at Bisi's CRX, all motor 1.5 NON-VTEC running 10's all day.
This is a stupid argument. Vtec is a tool, just like turbo's, just like intercoolers, etc. It serves the unique function of allowing a engine to have multiple personalities, mild and wild. That is it. Nothing more nothing less. Just becuase you have Vtec doesn't me anything, neither does having a turbo or nos. It is all in how it is done that things begin to get interesting. In the end forced induction is obviously more powerfull in the end. For a street NA engine vtec/vvl is nice to have. Not required but real nice. How many docile daily driver 185whp/145tq 2.0 liter cars do you know that dont have vtec. None. That is the purpose of vtec. Dual personalities.
i agree. same thing with my SHO. The unequal length intake runners and dual stage intake setup allow me to sound like a regular taurus from idle to 4grand. and from 4-7300rpm my car sounds sick. allows me to keep my fuel economy up while cruising, but for extra power i have the high end short runners to enhance breathing up top.
But the engine was designed in 1985. a bit before Vtec was on the block.
Go yamaha!

It explains how vtec is used to effectively have better camshafts at low and at high rpm. It DOES NOT show that one is a crappy, performance killing camshaft, like some of you believe. They are both good cams, used to do different things. One cam CAN be made to increase fuel economy, such as on my Accord v6, but both can be made to maximize power, such as on my b16.
