Yes, and no. State inspection requires a muffler and cat inside the exhaust system. So no technically you don't have to have a oem muffler for it. However if a cop really wanted to then he could give you a ticket for a factory style muffler. However cops see that you don't have a sporty muffler and tend to let it slide. That is a very rare incident that you will ever hear of a officer giving a ticket for a factory style muffler. However, it is technically still altering your factory exhaust. Hence: If he wanted to be an ass he could write you up for it.

This is very true, I have found out. I've been left off of numerous tickets if I am suttle and cool with the officer. Joking around with them and such. I have actually had officers invite to their car before after I was given a ticket and talk to them for about 10 minutes, so they can show me how there radar works and other stuff. This is the way I found out that the impala state troopers don't have an lt1 in them but simply the v6 and that they clock out at 125... but shh... I'm not supposed to tell anyone.

You know.. I have two damn pipes comming from that damn V6 mustang of mine.. and they don't look anything like stock.. NEVER been herassed about it.. just about the tint and the vynil crap on the windshields..

Supra.. I was just chillin.. hell the first time I was pulled over I was going 25 (yes EXACTLY the speed limit) and I think I had the damn thing in 3rd gear.. I could barley hear it!! But the cop was cool and said he just wanted to make sure I didn't have any holes..
I'm never bitchy to an officer untill they get bitchy with me..I have many friends who are on the roanoke city force so i know how it is... but this dude just so has it out for any import..

i was cruisin the strip down at the oceanfront, when we came to an almost stop, but we were just creeping. in the trolley lane, right next me was a cop pacing me....i was just waiting for him to say something or pull me over or say some shit about either the exhaust or blower, but he didnt.

ive never had a cop say shit to me about my exhaust.

my exhaust = MAC longtube headers, prochamber h-pipe (no cats), and cat back with 3 1/2 in tips.

 

It's true but unless really provoking an officer you should be fine. I've been in Matt's car when he creeps and it sounds completely stock LOL. It's just all about maintaining your cool and not doing anything stupid. I'm a psych major so I do understand the inner workings of the mind...Just a little LOL.
